Don’t Hold Down Your Finger to “Share” on Facebook

May 8, 2020 by Melinda Blau

I was recently asked to “share” on Facebook that it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a cause I certainly support.  I didn’t do it — and here’s why:

The message read:

Hi, hope all is well with you.. have a favor to ask for Breast Cancer Awareness month! Would you put a ❤ on your Facebook page, and then send this message to your women contacts? This is for women to remember it’s breast cancer prevention week! Hold your finger down on the message and hit forward.

Like most of you, I’m aware that Facebook “mines” my data, but I visit the site anyway.  I like the sharing and the connection to friends I never see and to people I barely know.  But I only share posts by hitting “share.”

According to a 2017 article in Inc., Why Do Facebook Hoaxes Often Ask You To Copy, Paste, And Modify, Rather Than To Share? this is a good practice.

Funny. Today I got a friend request on FB from Dvpra Fields. My friend , Dvora Fields, clearly didn’t sent it. But many might not see the one letter off and would accept.
I never respond to the various requests to forward or share. Too many problems could result.

For me the upside of making a mistake is that I feel lucky that at this age I can still learn a thing or two or three.

      Amen to that!
